Sean T. Carter earned his Bachelors’ Degree from the University of California at Berkeley. During his undergraduate years, he distinguished himself through various honors and activities, including membership on the National Dean’s List, being a recipient of the Alpha Phi Alpha National Academic Scholarship, and active membership in the African American Students’ Association. Upon completion of his undergraduate work, Mr. Carter was admitted to the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law and earned his Juris Doctorate with Honors.
As a law student, Mr. Carter was the President of the Black Law Students’ Association; he was awarded an NAACP Legal Defense Fund Honorable Earl Warren Scholarship and the Northwestern University School of Law Public Interest Fellowship. As a result of his fellowship award, Mr. Carter clerked within the National Office of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights in Washington, D.C. and the United States Attorneys’ Office, Northern District of California. He also served as an extern for the Honorable David H. Coar of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. After graduating from law school, Mr. Carter completed a two-year judicial clerkship under the tutelage of the Honorable Chief Judge J.B. McDade of the United States District Court, Central District of Illinois. Mr. Carter attributes his success as an attorney to the extraordinary education he received within the corridors and chambers of the United States District Court. Mr. Carter went on to practice complex litigation for internationally respected law firms in San Francisco, California, namely, Baker & McKenzie and Dentons (formerly, Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal). |
After founding The Carter Law Group, Mr. Carter has gone on to represent clients in a broad range of litigation disputes and transactional matters. While Mr. Carter focuses upon Labor & Employment, he has negotiated a wide variety of business transactions in the physical fitness, real estate, DE&I, literary, and entertainment industries. He has also achieved several remarkable results for clients in litigation brought under the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967.
Mr. Carter is licensed by the California State Bar and is admitted to practice in every federal court within the State including the United States Court of Appeal, Ninth Circuit.
In addition to his law practice, Mr. Carter served as a Diversity Manager for DLA Piper where he mentored and supported attorneys throughout the United States. He was also a Board Member of the Association of Law Firm Diversity Professionals (ALFDP).
Mr. Carter served on the Advisory Committee for the Community Lawyers, Inc., which provides low and moderate-income people access to affordable legal services in Compton, California. Mr. Carter is also a co-founder of the Ashanti Scholarship Fund which provides underrepresented students scholarship funding to attend college.
In his spare time, Mr. Carter tutors recent law school graduates in preparation for the California State Bar Examination. In addition, he works with disadvantaged youth through programs such as the Advancement Via Individual Determination Program (AVID), Child Fund International and Plan USA. Mr. Carter remains active as a member of the Northwestern University School of Law Alumni Admissions Committee and the U.C. Berkeley Alumni Association. He is an avid skier, a veteran audiophile and is entirely devoted to "The Lab."
